Walewale youth lock up Coordinating Director’s office in protest

Tensions flared in Walewale on Tuesday as a group of aggrieved youth stormed the Municipal Assembly premises and barricaded the office of the Municipal Coordinating Director.

The incident forced the Director, Justice Bayon, to flee the premises after receiving prior intelligence about the planned protest.

The demonstrators, numbering dozens, arrived early in the morning chanting slogans and demanding immediate action over what they described as longstanding grievances. Their presence created panic among staff and visitors, disrupting normal operations.

Upon entering the premises, the group allegedly forced access to parts of the office and locked up the Coordinating Director’s office, effectively halting administrative work.

Speaking to the media, the protesters accused the Director of absenteeism and incompetence, calling for his immediate removal.

They warned that while the current protest remained peaceful, further action could follow if their demands are not met.

The unrest is also linked to broader frustrations over unemployment, perceived neglect, and delays in key development projects in the area. Protesters cited poor road conditions and the non-utilisation of equipment meant for infrastructure improvements as major concerns.

Some observers believe the situation may also be influenced by internal political tensions within the municipality.

No injuries were reported, but the incident left workers at the Assembly shaken.

The Municipal Chief Executive, Mohammed Rabiu Jabaah, told JoyNews he would need clearance from the Regional Minister before commenting on the matter.

Both the Coordinating Director and other key officials have so far declined to provide further details.
