Education Ministry orders probe into video of students using charms in Kumasi schools

The Ministry of Education has instructed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to investigate a video showing male students from Islamic Senior High School and Sakafia Islamic Senior High School in Kumasi displaying charms they claim provide spiritual protection.

The footage, circulating on social media, shows some students concealing charms under their uniforms, while others brandished them openly.

The incident has raised concerns about discipline, student safety, and growing indiscipline in senior high schools. Deputy Minister for Education, Dr Clement Apaak, confirmed in a Facebook post on Thursday, 15th January 2026, that he referred the matter to the Director-General of GES for urgent action.

“I’ve forwarded the attached story and the associated disturbing video to the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service for action,” he said. Dr Apaak stressed that the government will not tolerate violence or misconduct in schools, particularly conflicts between students from different institutions.

He urged parents to take a more active role in monitoring their children’s behaviour, advising that they consistently caution their wards against acts of indiscipline. The Deputy Minister also highlighted the restoration of Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) as a key initiative to enhance collaboration between parents and schools.

“We restored PTAs because we believe parents have a crucial and collaborative role to play in the education of their wards, especially at the pre-tertiary level,” he added.
