President John Dramani Mahama has rewarded the University for Development Studies (UDS) football team with GH¢500,000 following their historic victory at the 2025 FISU World University Games.
The President made the announcement when the team visited the Jubilee House to present their trophy. He praised the players and coaching staff for their determination and teamwork, describing the victory as a proud moment for Ghana and the African continent.
UDS made history as the first African university to win the World University Football Cup, defeating defending champions Paulista University of Brazil 2–1 in extra time. The Ghanaian side showed remarkable resilience after conceding early, equalising through a well-worked team goal before sealing the win with a dramatic strike late in extra time.
UDS advanced through the group stages unbeaten, overcoming strong opposition from Europe and South America to reach the final.
The victory has been celebrated nationwide as a major boost for youth and sports development, highlighting Ghana’s growing ability to produce world-class student-athletes.
