WhatsApp to let users message without sharing phone numbers through new usernames

WhatsApp has announced a new username feature that will eventually allow users to chat without revealing their phone numbers.

The messaging platform began accepting username reservations on Monday, giving users an opportunity to secure their preferred handles before the feature rolls out globally later this year.

According to WhatsApp, the phased rollout is intended to help users claim unique usernames early, especially as the platform now serves more than three billion people worldwide.

Usernames will replace phone numbers in chats

Once the feature becomes available, people you communicate with will see your username instead of your phone number.

To start a conversation, someone must know your exact username. WhatsApp said there will be no public directory or search function, making it impossible for strangers to discover users by browsing the platform.

The company is also introducing an optional username key. This additional code must be shared before someone can message you for the first time, giving users greater control over who can contact them.

    More privacy for users

The update is expected to improve privacy, particularly for people who regularly share their WhatsApp details for work, business or social networking.

Instead of publishing a personal phone number, users will be able to share a unique username while keeping their number private.

The feature could also reduce unwanted messages from people who obtain phone numbers through group chats or public posts.

    Benefits for businesses and creators

The change is likely to benefit small businesses, content creators and entrepreneurs who use WhatsApp to connect with customers.

A username will provide a consistent identity that can also match their profiles on other Meta platforms, such as Instagram and Facebook, provided the chosen handle is available across Meta’s services.

This means businesses can promote a single username instead of exposing the phone numbers linked to mobile money accounts or other personal information.

    Feature will roll out gradually

WhatsApp said users will still need a phone number to register and use the app.

Although username reservations have begun, the messaging feature itself will be introduced gradually over the coming months.

As a result, users in Ghana and other countries may have to wait before the feature becomes available on their devices.
