A leaked copy of Christopher Nolan’s latest film, The Odyssey, attracted millions of views on X before it was removed, raising fresh concerns about online movie piracy.
According to industry publication Variety, a post containing a high-quality version of the film received 2.1 million views within two and a half hours on Saturday. The account that shared the movie was later suspended.
The leak quickly sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many users expressing surprise that the entire film had been uploaded to the platform.
Social Media Reacts to the Leak
Several X users commented on the incident as the video spread online.
One user joked, “The full Odyssey movie in a tweet, as Nolan intended.”
Another wrote, “The whole Odyssey film in an embedded video on Twitter. Crazy.”
A third user added, “Someone leaked The Odyssey movie in HD. I thought it was fake, but it’s true.”
Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter said a lower-quality version of the film also appeared on X on Sunday. However, it was removed about two hours later after receiving nearly 50,000 views.
Universal Moves to Remove Pirated Copies
In response to the leak, Universal Pictures said it acted quickly to remove the unauthorised uploads.
“We became aware of the unauthorised posting of the film and immediately initiated takedown protocols,” the studio said in a statement.
“We take copyright infringement seriously and will pursue all appropriate remedies to protect our content and intellectual property rights.”
Nolan Designed the Film for the Big Screen
Christopher Nolan has consistently encouraged audiences to watch The Odyssey in cinemas.
The Oscar-winning director filmed the entire three-hour epic using 70mm film, a high-resolution format that delivers its best visual experience on large IMAX screens.
The leak, therefore, contrasts sharply with Nolan’s vision of having audiences experience the film on the biggest screens possible.
Box Office Performance Remains Strong
Despite the piracy incident, the film continues to perform strongly at the global box office.
The Odyssey earned $215 million worldwide during its second weekend in cinemas. As a result, its total global earnings have reached $640 million.
The strong ticket sales suggest the online leak has not significantly affected the film’s commercial success.
