Iyabo Ojo accuses Ghanaian TV station of airing new movie without permission

Nollywood actress and filmmaker Iyabo Ojo has accused a Ghanaian television station of broadcasting her newly released movie without her permission.

The actress said she was shocked to discover that her film, The Memory of You Part 2, was allegedly aired on television less than 24 hours after it premiered on YouTube.

In a video shared on social media, Iyabo Ojo expressed frustration over the alleged unauthorised broadcast.

According to her, the movie was shown by North East TV in Ghana without her knowledge or approval.

She questioned how the station obtained the film and why it was aired without first securing the necessary rights.

“I didn’t give you permission,” the actress said, insisting she was never contacted before the alleged broadcast.

Iyabo Ojo said the issue extends beyond a single movie, stressing that filmmakers invest substantial time, effort and financial resources into producing films.

She argued that unauthorised broadcasts undermine creators’ ability to recover their investments and threaten the sustainability of the film industry.

Her comments have sparked fresh debate on copyright protection and the need to safeguard intellectual property in the digital era.

The allegations come amid growing concerns over the alleged unauthorised broadcast of Nollywood productions on some Ghanaian television stations.

Earlier this month, Nigerian filmmaker Uchenna Mbunabo also accused some Ghanaian broadcasters of airing Nigerian films without obtaining the required licences or compensating producers.

In response to similar complaints, Ghana’s National Film Authority has indicated that it is working with relevant stakeholders to strengthen measures against illegal movie broadcasts and copyright infringement.

North East TV had not publicly responded to Iyabo Ojo’s allegations at the time of publication.

The claims remain allegations, and no official findings have been made regarding the broadcaster’s rights to air the movie.
