High Court clears way for Abu Trica’s extradition to US

An Accra High Court has cleared the way for the extradition of Ghanaian socialite Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, to the United States.

The court dismissed his application seeking to block the extradition process, paving the way for Ghanaian authorities to transfer him to face criminal charges in the US.

    Lawyer Confirms Court Decision

The development was confirmed on Thursday, July 2, by Abu Trica’s lawyer, Oliver Barker-Vormawor.

In a Facebook post, Barker-Vormawor said he was informed while outside Ghana that the court had fast-tracked the case and approved his client’s extradition.

“I am out of Ghana for work. I just heard that the case of Abu Trica has been fast-tracked, and a judge has just ordered his extradition. Hmmm. FBI 1 – Abu 1. I guess this issue goes to the Supreme Court,” he wrote.

He added that the legal team intends to challenge the ruling at the Supreme Court.

    Previous Attempt to Halt Extradition

On May 19, 2026, Abu Trica’s lawyers filed a certiorari application asking the High Court to quash a decision by the Gbese District Court.

The lower court had authorised his extradition in connection with criminal proceedings in the United States.

However, the High Court dismissed the application on July 2, allowing the extradition process to continue.

    US Fraud Charges

US authorities are seeking Abu Trica’s extradition over allegations that he participated in a fraud scheme that targeted elderly victims across the United States.

According to unsealed court documents from the US Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio, prosecutors allege that he was part of a criminal network involved in online romance scams since 2023.

The indictment claims the group used artificial intelligence to create fake identities and build romantic relationships with elderly victims through social media and dating platforms.

Investigators allege the suspects gained the victims’ trust before convincing them to send money for fake medical emergencies, travel expenses and investment opportunities.

US prosecutors further claim that after the funds were received, Abu Trica helped distribute more than $8 million to co-conspirators in Ghana and other countries.

The allegations remain before the US courts, and Abu Trica is expected to challenge the extradition ruling at Ghana’s Supreme Court.
