Egypt no.1 El-Shenawy sanctioned following referee incident

Al Ahly SC goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy has been handed a four-match suspension following an altercation with a referee after his side’s 1-1 draw against Ceramica Cleopatra FC in the Egyptian Pro League.

The incident occurred after the final whistle, with El-Shenawy—who was an unused substitute during the match—reacting angrily to a late decision not to award Al Ahly a penalty for a suspected handball in stoppage time. In the aftermath, he was found to have made physical contact with the referee.

In a statement, league authorities confirmed that the Egypt international has been suspended for four matches and fined 50,000 Egyptian pounds for misconduct involving contact with the match official.

The 37-year-old remains a key figure for Egypt, having served as the national team’s first-choice goalkeeper during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. He is also expected to be included in the squad for the upcoming World Cup in North America.

Domestically, Al Ahly—reigning league champions—currently sit third in the standings after their opening match in the play-offs, trailing leaders Zamalek SC by five points.

El-Shenawy’s suspension will keep him out of action until the final week of the league’s Championship round, where the top seven teams compete for the title.
