Chris Brown has pleaded guilty to affray over an attack at a London nightclub in 2023, bringing a significant development in a case that was initially set to go to trial later this year.
The 37-year-old singer appeared before Southwark Crown Court on Friday, where he admitted the affray charge during a hearing that lasted less than five minutes.
Brown had previously denied more serious charges of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, causing actual bodily harm and possessing an offensive weapon, namely a tequila bottle. Those charges have now been dropped.
He is due to be sentenced on October 26, 2026.
Co-defendant also admits affray
Brown’s co-defendant, Omololu Akinlolu, also pleaded guilty to affray.
Akinlolu, who performs under the stage name Hoody Baby, is also scheduled to be sentenced on October 26.
Under UK law, affray involves using or threatening unlawful violence in a manner that would cause another person to fear for their safety.
Incident took place in Mayfair nightclub
The case stems from an incident at the Tape nightclub, a private members’ venue in London’s Mayfair district, on February 19, 2023.
Judge Tony Baumgartner confirmed the sentencing date after accepting the guilty pleas.
Fans gather outside court
Brown, known for hit songs including Loyal, Look at Me Now and With You, arrived at court wearing a beige suit and a baseball cap while accompanied by security personnel.
He acknowledged supporters gathered outside the courthouse by waving to them.
Fans played his music, held signs and shouted messages of support as he entered the building.
Bail allowed world tour
During earlier court proceedings, Brown was granted bail on condition that he paid a £5 million security bond.
The bail terms also allowed him to continue his world tour, provided he surrendered his passport whenever he arrived in each country before it was temporarily returned for travel.
Last year, Brown joked during a performance in Manchester about spending time in custody following his arrest.
Addressing fans at the Co-op Live Arena, he thanked supporters before humorously referring to his stay in jail, saying, “Thank you to the jail. It was really nice.”
Brown will return to Southwark Crown Court in October for sentencing on the affray conviction.
