A member of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), James Agbey, has accused some government appointees of undermining President John Mahama’s administration, warning that the party will not allow what he described as “internal saboteurs” to derail the President’s agenda.
In a public statement issued on Thursday, July 23, Mr Agbey said President Mahama continues to enjoy strong public support, but the actions of some ministers and heads of state institutions are generating growing public frustration.
Describing himself as “a longstanding operative, active and loyal member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC),” Mr Agbey said he was encouraged by President Mahama’s efforts to deliver on his campaign promises but disappointed by the conduct of certain appointees.
He praised the President’s leadership, saying Mr Mahama had fulfilled his promise to “do politics differently” and had demonstrated the determination and courage needed to implement his agenda.
According to Mr Agbey, President Mahama has shown he possesses the “drive and ability to get things done,” adding that he “doesn’t run from a fight for what he believes in and he doesn’t blindly follow the lead of others.”
He also referenced a recent Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) report, claiming it reflected strong public approval for the President while highlighting growing dissatisfaction with the performance of some government appointees.
Mr Agbey argued that although President Mahama assembled “a Cabinet of superb quality” and experienced managers to drive his administration, some officials have failed to support the government’s anti-corruption and economic transformation agenda.
“But reports emerging indicate that some of the President’s men just don’t have an eye beyond parochial personal interest to drive the President’s agenda to combat corruption and grow the economy,” he stated.
He further alleged that some ministers and chief executives of state institutions had become disconnected from the people who voted them into office.
“Some Ministers and CEOs of parastatal institutions and agencies have become demigods, doing as they please and viewing those who elected them with condescension and contempt,” he said.
Mr Agbey also claimed the party was aware of individuals allegedly working against the administration from within.
“We also know of those attempting to undermine the President’s reset agenda,” he said. “Some of us have chosen to speak out to send a clear warning to those appointees to watch it.”
He concluded with a strong warning, insisting that the NDC would not allow internal divisions to derail President Mahama’s administration.
“We are not going to allow the internal saboteurs to have their way and bring the president down. We know the saboteurs, and they should be careful,” he declared.
Mr. Agbey urged all government appointees to align their actions with the President’s vision, stressing that party supporters remain committed to ensuring the success of the Mahama administration.
