Martin Kpebu: Initial plan was to delay Abu Trica extradition until Ofori-Atta’s return

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has disclosed that the initial thinking surrounding the extradition of Ghanaian socialite Abu Trica was to delay the process until former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta also returned to Ghana.

Speaking on TV3’s current affairs programme, The KeyPoints, Kpebu said Abu Trica’s extradition had always been considered a possibility. However, he said some people preferred that it happened at the same time as Ofori-Atta’s return.

“We all knew that someday, somehow, it was possible that Abu Trica would be extradited, but we were hoping to delay it as much as possible until Ken Ofori-Atta was also brought back,” he said.

Kpebu explained that the preferred approach was to align the two developments.

“Until Ken Ofori-Atta is also brought, or we do an exchange. At the time we are handing over Abu Trica, we are also receiving Ofori-Atta,” he stated.

He maintained that there was no objection to Abu Trica’s extradition itself, but rather to the timing of the process.

“So as for extradition, it wasn’t a problem,” he added.

According to Kpebu, synchronising Abu Trica’s extradition with efforts to secure Ken Ofori-Atta’s return would have better served Ghana’s interests.

His comments reflect his personal view on the timing of the extradition process and not an announced government policy.
