Ghanaians in Spain urged to regularise status under new immigration amnesty

Ghanaians living in Spain have been encouraged to take advantage of a new immigration amnesty introduced by the Spanish government, which is expected to benefit hundreds of thousands of undocumented migrants.

The appeal was made by Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang during an engagement with the Ghanaian community in Spain, where she urged eligible nationals to regularise their immigration status under the programme.

The Spanish initiative is expected to grant legal residency to around 500,000 undocumented migrants who have lived in the country for at least five months prior to December 2025. The Vice President described the policy as a positive development and assured that the Government of Ghana is ready to support citizens seeking to benefit from it.

The engagement also addressed wider concerns affecting Ghanaians abroad, including personal safety and the importance of maintaining valid travel documentation.

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa clarified that the amnesty will not apply to individuals with criminal records. He added that a designated police officer will assist applicants in obtaining clearance from the Ghana Police Service, a requirement for regularisation before the June 30 deadline.

He further provided updates on investigations into the death of a Ghanaian student in Latvia, assuring the community that efforts are ongoing to ensure justice.

According to government officials, these measures form part of broader efforts to protect the welfare and interests of Ghanaians living in the diaspora.
