Ayariga Slams Poor Supervision, Calls for Engineers to Be Prosecuted

The Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has called for a thorough investigation and prosecution of engineers linked to the collapse of a building at the Accra Newtown Experimental D/A School.

He argued that the failure of an uncompleted structure raises serious concerns about adherence to safety standards and due diligence in construction practices.

Speaking at the scene of the incident in Accra Newtown, Mr. Ayariga expressed condolences to the affected families and criticised what he described as weak project supervision across the country.

“This incident highlights persistent lapses in how construction projects are supervised. Too often, attention is only drawn to these issues after lives are lost, with little follow-up action. Those responsible must be held accountable,” he said.

The tragedy occurred on Sunday, March 29, when an old school structure—reportedly being used as a makeshift place of worship—collapsed, resulting in multiple casualties.

According to the Ghana National Fire Service, a distress call was received at 5:01 p.m., with rescue teams arriving shortly after to begin search and recovery operations.

Preliminary reports indicate that 23 individuals—including women, men, and minors—were trapped beneath the debris. Through coordinated efforts involving emergency responders and residents, 20 victims were rescued and transported to health facilities for treatment.

Three people, however, lost their lives in the incident. Their bodies have since been handed over to the police as investigations continue.

Mr. Ayariga stressed the need for decisive action to prevent future occurrences, urging authorities to strengthen oversight and enforce accountability within the construction sector.
