Zootopia 2 debuted with phenomenal strength, pulling in one of the biggest opening weekends ever for an animated film. According to early box-office figures, it earned near-record numbers over its Thanksgiving holiday launch, quickly becoming the highest global animated opening in history.
International markets have been a major force behind its success. In China, a notoriously challenging territory for Hollywood films, the sequel grossed over $600 million, making it the top animated release from the Motion Picture Association in that market.
Domestically, Zootopia 2 has also posted strong figures, with more than $390 million in ticket sales across the United States and Canada. The film reunites beloved characters such as Officer Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde in an expansive new adventure that blends heart, humor, and social themes—a formula that has resonated with audiences worldwide. The success underscores Disney’s continued dominance in animation and its ability to craft stories that connect across generations and cultures.
Alan Bergman, Co-Chairman of Disney Entertainment, credited the film’s triumph to its global fanbase and the creativity of its filmmakers, applauding their work in bringing together a story “that connects so deeply with audiences everywhere.
Zootropolis 2 had already achieved the biggest opening weekend for an animated film when it was released to coincide with Thanksgiving in the US.
It went on to become the fastest animated Hollywood film to reach the $1bn (£750m) mark globally.
Fantasy adventure film Ne Zha 2 is still comfortably ahead, having made most of its $2.2bn takings in China.
