Police in Hamilton, Ontario, have identified 17-year-old Mackale Lavoie as the primary suspect in the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Berlinda Sarkodie, a Ghanaian woman who was killed in Toronto last week.
The tragic incident occurred on the evening of July 8 in the city’s west end. According to Toronto Police, Sarkodie was found with multiple gunshot wounds after officers responded to reports of gunfire near an apartment complex on Jane Street. She was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.
Following initial investigations, authorities now believe the shooting was targeted. Surveillance footage and witness statements helped police trace the suspect’s movements. On Sunday, Hamilton Police officially named Lavoie as the person wanted in connection with the homicide. He is currently facing a Canada wide warrant for second-degree murder.
Sarkodie, a beloved member of the Ghanaian-Canadian community, was known for her work in youth advocacy and community outreach programs. Her death has sent shockwaves through both the local community in Toronto and back home in Ghana, where her family has called for justice.
Investigators say Lavoie may be armed and dangerous and have urged the public not to approach him if seen. Authorities are asking anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact Crime Stoppers or local police immediately.
As the search continues, community leaders and human rights groups are calling for greater efforts to curb gun violence and protect vulnerable residents, particularly immigrant and minority communities who often bear the brunt of such tragedies.
