In a profession where few can boast experience at both local and international levels, Salifu Barikisu stands out as a remarkable exception. The Tamale-based FIFA referee has steadily built a reputation for excellence, making significant strides both on and off the pitch.
Currently a Level 400 student pursuing Hospitality Management at Tamale Technical University, Barikisu exemplifies discipline and determination, successfully balancing her academic journey with the demanding responsibilities of top-level refereeing.
Her latest milestone comes at the 2026 Honda Football Championship, where she is officiating matches at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium. Notably, she is the only female referee at this year’s competition—an achievement that underscores her trailblazing role in Ghanaian football and highlights progress toward greater gender representation in the sport.
Barikisu’s rise has been built on a strong domestic track record. She has officiated across major competitions, including the Women’s Premier League, Division One League, and the Ghana Premier League. Her involvement in high-profile fixtures—such as matches featuring Dreams FC, Basake Holy Stars, Edubiase United FC, and Berekum Arsenal—has further cemented her reputation as a reliable and competent official.
This season, she has also served as a fourth official in a Ghana Premier League clash between Hearts of Oak and Eleven Wonders at the Accra Sports Stadium, adding to her growing list of top-flight experiences.

Beyond the domestic scene, Barikisu has represented Ghana on the international stage with distinction. She has officiated at the WAFU Zone B tournament in Kumasi and handled matches in countries such as Morocco, Mali, Nigeria, and Uganda—demonstrating that her expertise is recognised well beyond Ghana’s borders.
From lecture halls in Tamale to football pitches across West Africa, Salifu Barikisu continues to inspire with her dedication, resilience, and ambition. As she keeps breaking barriers, her journey signals a promising future—not just for herself, but for aspiring female referees across the country.
