James Cleverly was appointed as Secretary of State for the Home Department on November 13, 2023.
He served as Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Affairs from September 2022, having previously served as Secretary of State for Education, Minister for Europe at the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO), Minister for Middle East and North Africa, and as joint Minister of State in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Department for International Development.
He was born at Lewisham Hospital, where his father worked to establish a prosperous small business and his mother practiced midwifery. He learned the value of supporting both the public and private sectors from witnessing how hardworking both of his parents were.
He grew up in Chelmsford, where I spent a large portion of my childhood, and after graduating from high school, he followed family customs and enlisted in the army. After an injury prevented him from pursuing that goal, he returned to school, earned a business degree, and enlisted in the Territorial Army.
He married Susie while still in college, and the two of them have two adorable and active sons.

Prior to founding his own company, he worked on several market-leading titles during his career in
magazine and digital publishing.
He is aware of the challenges and potential rewards of owning a small business.
He continued to serve in the TA and was called upon in 2004 to help TA soldiers who
had been mobilized to ensure that they could return home from Iraq with their jobs. He took great pride in the fact that all soldiers who wished to resume their previous roles could do so.
He was appointed to the London Fire Authority’s chairmanship by Boris Johnson in 2012. Along with senior officers, he brought about cost-saving and performance-enhancing changes for the London Fire Brigade. He has a strong commitment to ensuring that the public services on which we all depend are financially stable and suited for the future.
