Actor Kiefer Sutherland, best known for his roles in 24 and Designated Survivor, was arrested early Monday morning following an alleged altercation with a ride share driver in Hollywood, authorities confirmed.
Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said Sutherland “entered a ride-share vehicle, physically assaulted the driver (the victim), and made criminal threats” in an incident at 00:15 PST (08:15 GMT) on Monday. The victim was not injured in the incident, the LAPD added.
Sutherland, 59, was released after paying a bond of $50,000 (£37,000). He is due to appear in court on 2 February. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers responded to a call shortly after 12:15 a.m. near Sunset Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue about a possible assault involving a ride-share vehicle. Once on the scene, police say they identified Sutherland, 59, as the suspect.
Law enforcement alleges that Sutherland entered the ride-share vehicle, physically assaulted the driver and made criminal threats toward the victim. The driver did not require medical treatment at the scene, according to police statements. Sutherland was taken into custody on suspicion of criminal threats and booked at an LAPD facility.
Sutherland has had a long and celebrated career in film and television, earning acclaim for his portrayal of Jack Bauer in the hit series 24 and roles in movies like The Lost Boys, Stand by Me, and A Few Good Men. He also starred as President Tom Kirkman in Designated Survivor.
However, this is not his first brush with the law. Over the years, Sutherland has faced multiple legal issues, including DUI arrests in 2004 and 2007, with the latter resulting in a 48-day jail sentence. A 2009 assault charge was later dropped after an apology.
ongoing investigation
Detectives from the LAPD’s Hollywood Division are continuing their investigation into the alleged incident. At the time of reporting, Sutherland’s representatives had not issued a comment on the latest allegations.
This arrest adds a new chapter to the veteran actor’s complex personal history, and it’s likely to be closely followed as the legal process unfolds.
