Ghanaian singer and songwriter Gyakie has paid a heartfelt tribute to late highlife legend Ebo Taylor during an interview on BBC Focus on Africa. Speaking to the BBC, Mark Wilberforce, Gyakie opened up about the profound impact Ebo Taylor had on her life while growing up, describing his music as an integral part of her childhood memories.
“I really felt this one because he’s been part of my childhood memories. My dad used to play his music when we were young. His songs were inclusive,” she said.
The “Forever” hitmaker expressed deep sadness upon hearing of his passing, noting that although he is no longer physically present, his legacy will endure through his timeless music. “Hearing that he’s no more with us, I felt really emotional and sad that we can’t see him in person, but his music will live with us forever,” she added.
Many people consider Ebo Taylor to be one of Ghana’s most significant highlife pioneers, having influenced musicians for generations throughout Africa and beyond.
For artists like Gyakie, their sound not only shaped the nation’s music landscape but the entire world.
