Asamoah Gyan missed the penalty kick, despite Ghana being awarded one and Suarez being sent off for his unsportsmanlike behavior.

In response to a social media troll who brought up his costly penalty miss from the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Asamoah Gyan unleashed a vicious retort.

The former striker for Ghana was responding to a post regarding Emilio Nsue’s missed penalty during Sunday’s 2023 AFCON round of 16 match between Equatorial Guinea and Guinea.

The former forward for Sunderland and Al Ain expressed sympathy to Nsue in a post on X (formerly Twitter), noting that all elite athletes encounter similar difficulties.

“Hmmmmmmm FOOTBALL. Only the best players go through that. I can imagine what’s going on in his mind. Hmmmm,” he wrote.

However, a social media troll with the username @Amokode_20 decided to use the moment to remind Gyan of his penalty miss in 2010.

“Do you still remember that penalty kick??” the social media user wrote, but Gyan hit back with a savage reply: “I remember golf kick wai”

Recall that at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the Black Stars were one point away from becoming the first African team to make it to the final four before losing on penalties to Uruguay.

Suarez’s hand save of Dominic Adiyiah’s header that was headed toward goal in the closing seconds of extra time gave Ghana a penalty, adding to the agony of the loss.

At the end of the day, the South Americans defeated Ghana 4–2 on penalties to advance to the World Cup semifinal.
