Tech billionaire Elon Musk has called on his millions of followers to cancel their Netflix subscriptions, sparking fresh debate about streaming platforms, representation, and cultural influence.
The Tesla and SpaceX CEO took to social media this week to urge parents to drop the service, writing that doing so would be “for the health of your kids.” Musk’s criticism centers on Netflix’s inclusion of LGBTQ+ storylines, particularly transgender characters, which he described as part of a “woke agenda” being pushed on children.
The move was triggered in part by renewed controversy around the animated series Dead End: Paranormal Park, which featured a transgender character. Although the show ended in 2022, it has resurfaced as a target for right-wing criticism following old comments by its creator, Hamish Steele, about a prominent political figure. Musk amplified the backlash by suggesting the show and others like it promoted harmful content for young viewers.
Following his posts, Musk revealed he had personally cancelled his Netflix account. The remarks quickly went viral, prompting calls among his supporters to boycott the platform. The reaction was immediate on Wall Street, with Netflix shares dipping by more than 2% amid concerns about subscriber churn and investor sentiment.
Netflix has not officially responded to Musk’s comments, but industry analysts note that the streaming giant has long embraced diversity in its programming, positioning itself as a platform that reflects a broad range of voices and identities. The controversy has reignited a cultural debate over whether such representation empowers marginalized groups or alienates conservative viewers.
Supporters of LGBTQ+ inclusion have pushed back against Musk’s stance. Zach Barack, a transgender actor who voiced a character in Dead End, defended the show’s impact, saying that many young fans had found it affirming and inspirational.
Musk, however, doubled down on his criticism, arguing that parents must take stronger control over what their children consume online. The incident adds to the billionaire’s growing list of clashes with major media and entertainment companies, following past disputes with Disney and other networks over similar issues.
