Former Miss Universe Jamaica finalist LaToya Malcolm has died at the age of 35, the Miss Universe Jamaica organisation has announced.
In a statement shared on Instagram on July 18, the organisation paid tribute to Malcolm, who competed in the 2024 Miss Universe Jamaica competition.
“We mourn the passing of MUJ alumna LaToya Malcolm, who proudly competed in the 2024 Miss Universe Jamaica Competition. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends, and loved ones. Rest peacefully, LaToya. You will never be forgotten.”
The organisation did not disclose the cause of her death.
Beauty queen and entertainer
Malcolm was a finalist in the 2024 Miss Universe Jamaica pageant and was also crowned Miss Jamaica Bikini International 2024.
Following her victory, she thanked her supporters and dedicated the achievement to her late father.
“I appreciate the continued love and support from my friends and family,” she wrote on Instagram.
“My beloved father, Mr Malcolm, this win was for you. Your one and only daughter continues to make you proud. I know you’re smiling down on me from heaven.”
Beyond pageantry, Malcolm built a career as an actress, television presenter and dance instructor.
Shortly before her death, she appeared on Jamaica’s Smile Jamaica morning programme, where she showcased her dance skills.
In a July 3 Instagram post after the appearance, she wrote: “Rise and smile! Early morning moves and smiles! Thank you, TVJ Smile Jamaica, for having me.”
Passion for community service
Outside the entertainment industry, Malcolm enjoyed travelling, reading and sightseeing.
She was also actively involved in volunteer work, supporting young people with career guidance and employment opportunities.
Tributes pour in
Following news of her passing, tributes poured in from fans, colleagues and members of the pageant community.
Reigning Miss Universe Jamaica Gabrielle Henry described Malcolm’s death as a significant loss.
“After many years of experiencing loss and hardship, I’ve learnt the deep relevance of pausing and reflecting on the lives of those who lived fully, unapologetically and with great passion,” Henry wrote on Instagram Stories.
“To hear of LaToya’s passing is a great loss to her family and the wider community. Jamaica, her impact will always be remembered, and her voice will not be forgotten.”
Malcolm is remembered for her contributions to pageantry, entertainment and youth development, as well as the positive impact she made on those around her.
