Cambodia and Ghana confirm viral deportation notice is fake

A notice ordering African nationals to leave Cambodia by May 31, 2026 is fake. Both the Cambodian and Ghanaian governments have confirmed this.

The document spread widely on WhatsApp and social media. It claimed that citizens of Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon, and Uganda faced arrest, two years in jail, and an $8,000 fine if they stayed in Cambodia past May 31.

    Cambodia Calls It “Completely Untrue”

Cambodia’s General Department of Immigration issued a press clarification on May 29, 2026. It named two websites campaigneronline.com and newsghana.com as sources of the false report. The department stated the information is “completely untrue.” It urged the public to visit www.immigration.gov.kh or call (+855) 78 38 66 99 for accurate information.

Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Responds

Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also released a statement on May 29. It confirmed that diplomatic engagements with Cambodian authorities proved the notice was fake. No Cambodian state institution issued it.

The Ministry urged the public and Ghanaian media to stop sharing the document. It warned that the fake notice was creating unnecessary fear among affected persons and their families.

    85 Ghanaians Already Back Home

Despite the fake notice, the Ministry noted that some Ghanaian nationals in Cambodia had already expressed a desire to return home. Ghana’s High Commission in Malaysia, which covers Cambodia, has helped 85 Ghanaian nationals return between March and May 2026.

Arrangements are ongoing to bring back a further 76 Ghanaians currently in Cambodia who want to return.

Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs praised Cambodia’s government for its cooperation and pledged to keep working to protect Ghanaian nationals abroad.

The public is advised to rely only on official sources for information on Ghanaians in Cambodia.
