Youth unemployment remains government’s biggest challenge — Asiedu Nketia

Johnson Asiedu Nketia says youth unemployment remains the biggest challenge facing the government.

Speaking during the National Democratic Congress Thank You Tour in Tolon, the NDC Chairman said the public sector cannot employ every young person seeking work.

“It is not possible for the government to recruit everybody into the Police Service, Army, Fire Service, Immigration, Customs, and the other security agencies,” he said.

According to him, the government plans to focus more on skills training and vocational education to help young people create jobs for themselves.

He said Ghana must reduce its dependence on public sector employment and encourage practical skills that can support entrepreneurship and private sector growth.

Asiedu Nketia pointed to countries such as the United States, Canada and Germany, where migrants often receive vocational training to help them become economically productive.

“When you go to America, Canada, or Germany, one of the first things they do is to help you acquire skills or training that will allow you to work and earn a living,” he stated.

He encouraged young people to remain hopeful and support government programmes aimed at reducing unemployment and expanding economic opportunities.

The NDC Chairman made the remarks during the party’s nationwide Thank You Tour following its victory in the 2024 general elections.
