Ghana to battle Uganda for place at FIFA U-17 World Cup

Ghana national under-17 football team will face Uganda national under-17 football team in a playoff match with a place at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup at stake.

The winner of the encounter will secure qualification for the tournament scheduled to take place in Qatar from November 19 to December 13.

The playoff opportunity comes after the Black Starlets failed to progress to the quarter-finals of the 2026 Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Although Ghana secured a 3-1 victory over South Africa national under-17 football team and finished the group stage with four points, the team placed third in Group D behind group winners Senegal national under-17 football team and Algeria national under-17 football team.

Ghana and Algeria ended the group stage level on both points and goal difference. However, Ghana missed out on advancing after the qualification spot was decided by a drawing of lots, with Algeria emerging on the favourable side of the process.

The upcoming playoff now gives Ghana another opportunity to secure a place at the global tournament and end a lengthy absence from the competition.

The Black Starlets have not featured at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup since 2017 and will be aiming to return to the world stage.

Adding further intrigue to the encounter, Uganda is currently coached by Laryea Kingston, who previously served as head coach of the Black Starlets.
