NDC using arrests to silence critics – Oppong Nkrumah alleges

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, has alleged that more than 16 members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) have been arrested by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government over social media commentary.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Midday News on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, the former Information Minister claimed the individuals were targeted for posting comments online that the government considered unfavourable.

“Over sixteen NPP persons have been arrested for simply making comments on social media or posting things on social media that the government finds unpalatable,” he alleged.

Mr. Oppong Nkrumah made the remarks while discussing the recent arrest and detention of the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC.

“In the case of Kwame Baffoe Abronye, he was earlier arrested, denied bail… and now, Abronye has been detained from last Wednesday till today as I am speaking to you,” he said.

The lawmaker further alleged that family members, political associates and lawyers of Abronye DC had been denied access to him since his detention.

According to Mr. Oppong Nkrumah, the government was using arrests, detention and remand as tools to intimidate critics and suppress dissenting views.

“The whole idea is to intimidate people and ensure that everybody keeps quiet when they are failing on delivering on the promises they made to the Ghanaian people,” he claimed.

He stated that the NPP would continue to challenge the alleged actions through public advocacy and the judicial system.

“We will use the platforms of public advocacy to call that out as well while we do what is necessary through the judicial system,” he added.
