The Ghana Police Service has arrested four suspected robbers in Bolgatanga and retrieved an AK47 rifle together with 87 rounds of live ammunition during an intelligence-led operation.
The suspects were identified as Abdulai Ibrahim, Amadu Rahman, Amadu Sulemana and Adu Yakubu.
According to a police statement shared on Facebook on Wednesday, May 6, the suspects were arrested in Bolgatanga on Tuesday, May 5.
Police said investigations revealed that the suspects gathered at Gbane on May 4 after travelling from Yagaba and Fumbisi to carry out a robbery operation.
The suspects allegedly robbed four motorbikes and several mobile phones during the attack.
Police said the suspects admitted during interrogation to carrying out several robberies in the Talensi District and along the Yagaba-Fumbisi and Yagaba-Nanguruma roads in the North East Region.
Investigators also linked the suspects to the robbery attack on the Vikandi Phone Shop on March 22, 2025. The incident was captured in a viral video showing armed men wielding an AK47 assault rifle.
The suspects have further been connected to robbery attacks at mining sites in Gbane, where victims were reportedly robbed of gold and large sums of money.
Police said the suspects later led investigators to a farm near Biung, close to Gbane, where the alleged gang leader, Amadu Rahman, had hidden the AK47 rifle.
A search at the location led to the retrieval of the rifle, bearing serial number 68100563, and 87 rounds of live ammunition concealed in a fertiliser sack.
According to police, Rahman collapsed during the retrieval operation and was rushed to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
His body has been deposited at the hospital morgue pending an autopsy.
The remaining three suspects remain in police custody and are expected to be arraigned before court.
