The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has urged the public to handle electrical appliances with care to prevent fire outbreaks, especially during ongoing power outages.
The Greater Accra Regional Command issued the warning as parts of Accra continue to experience intermittent electricity supply. The situation follows a recent fire incident at a substation operated by the Ghana Grid Company in Akosombo.
Authorities say unstable power supply increases the risk of fire incidents. This is particularly likely when electricity is suddenly restored after an outage.
Speaking to Citi News, Greater Accra Regional Fire Officer, Rashid Kwame Nisawu, advised residents to remain cautious when power returns. He warned that sudden power surges can damage appliances and trigger electrical faults.
He stressed that people should avoid switching on appliances immediately after electricity is restored. According to him, doing so can cause short circuits and, in severe cases, lead to fires that may destroy property and endanger lives.
The fire officer also called on the public to take personal responsibility for fire safety. He noted that many household items, including fans, refrigerators, and gas cylinders, rely on energy and must be handled carefully.
He added that failure to follow basic fire safety measures can result in serious disasters. He urged residents to treat the current situation as a wake-up call to adopt safer practices at home and in the workplace.
