Fianoo warns against frequent coaching changes, proposes Schäfer Stopgap

Former Black Stars Management Committee member Kudjoe Fianoo has proposed that Winfried Schäfer, the technical director of the Ghana Football Association, be appointed as interim head coach of the national team ahead of the World Cup.

His remarks follow the dismissal of Otto Addo after a string of underwhelming performances, culminating in a 2-1 defeat to Germany in an international friendly in Stuttgart.

Fianoo argued that, given the limited time available before the World Cup, entrusting Schäfer with temporary leadership would provide stability while the association conducts a thorough search for a permanent coach. He noted that the technical director’s familiarity with the local football landscape positions him well to manage the team during the transitional period.

According to Fianoo, Ghana must avoid the growing trend of frequent coaching changes, which he believes undermines long-term development. He emphasised the need for a more deliberate and strategic approach to appointing a substantive head coach—one capable of steering the team across short-, medium-, and long-term objectives.

He further recalled that Schäfer had previously expressed interest in coaching the Black Stars but was instead appointed to his current technical role, suggesting that the moment may now be opportune to leverage his experience.

The Ghana Football Association is expected to announce a new head coach for the Black Stars in the coming days, as discussions intensify over the team’s direction ahead of upcoming international competitions.
