NIA: Ghana Card not enabled for financial transactions

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has debunked reports claiming that the Ghana Card can now be used for financial transactions, describing such information as inaccurate and misleading.

In a statement issued on April 8, 2026, and signed by its Head of Corporate Affairs, Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, the Authority stressed that the Ghana Card has not been activated for any financial transaction purposes.

“The Ghana Card has not been enabled for financial transactions at this time,” the statement emphasized.

The NIA urged the public to disregard unverified claims and rely only on official communication from the Authority.

However, the NIA confirmed that high-level discussions are ongoing among policymakers and key players in Ghana’s financial and regulatory sectors about the possible future integration of the Ghana Card into financial systems.

According to the Authority, these talks are part of broader efforts to expand digital identity usage and promote financial inclusion nationwide.

Despite these engagements, the NIA clarified that no final decision has been made. It assured the public that any official policy or rollout allowing the Ghana Card to be used for financial transactions will be communicated through its verified channels.

The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the integrity, security, and proper use of Ghana’s national identification system.
