At least 15 people have died, and six others have been hospitalized after a canoe carrying mourners capsized on the Oti River near Kete Krachi in the Oti Region.

The tragic incident occurred on Friday, October 10, when the canoe, reportedly overloaded with about 21 passengers, overturned while traveling from Okuma to Debume in the Krachi West District.

According to eyewitnesses, the canoe became unstable midway through the journey and eventually capsized, throwing all passengers into the river. Rescue efforts by local residents and the Ghana Navy led to the recovery of several bodies, including children believed to be between the ages of 2 and 14.

Authorities say six survivors are currently receiving treatment at nearby health facilities.

The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has launched an investigation into the disaster and confirmed that preliminary findings suggest the vessel was grossly overloaded.

The accident has left the community in shock, as families mourn loved ones who were returning from a funeral when the tragedy struck.
