An American Israeli man who spent over a year in Hamas captivity says former U.S. President Donald Trump holds the key to ending the war in Gaza and securing the release of the remaining hostages.
Keith Siegel, 66, was kidnapped from Kibbutz Kfar Aza during the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attacks on southern Israel. He was freed in February 2025 after 484 days in captivity, as part of a ceasefire agreement that Trump helped broker just before returning to office.
Speaking to the BBC, Siegel urged Trump to take further action.
“He helped bring me home. He has the influence to bring the rest back too and to stop this war,” Siegel said.
The October 2023 attacks by Hamas killed more than 1,200 people in Israel and led to a devastating military response in Gaza. Thousands remain displaced, and more than 100 hostages are believed to still be held by Hamas and affiliated groups.
Siegel described his time in captivity as traumatic, noting poor living conditions, limited access to medicine, and psychological abuse. He credits international pressure especially from the U.S. for securing his release.
Trump’s earlier role in the ceasefire talks drew both praise and criticism, with some allies welcoming his tough diplomacy and others warning of long-term instability.
Siegel, however, remains focused on those still in danger.
“Politics aside, this is about human lives. The world can’t look away,” he said.
The ceasefire deal that freed Siegel included a temporary truce, humanitarian aid to Gaza, and the release of dozens of hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. Talks for a permanent resolution remain stalled.
