The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has praised the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and its youth partners for their commitment to grassroots climate solutions, following a visit to the Assembly’s innovative rooftop garden project on Thursday.
The visit formed part of Mr. Khan’s broader West Africa tour, aimed at strengthening city-to-city collaboration on climate resilience, sustainable development, and urban innovation. At the AMA headquarters, he toured the rooftop garden a green space designed to promote urban farming, reduce heat, and improve air quality in the heart of the capital.
Speaking after the tour, Mayor Khan commended the AMA and the young people involved for transforming a once-unused space into a model of sustainable urban living. “What I’ve seen here is incredibly inspiring. The leadership of young people and city officials in building climate solutions from the ground up is exactly what the world needs,” he said.
He emphasized that cities like Accra and London have a shared responsibility to lead the global fight against climate change, especially as urban populations continue to grow.
Accra Mayor Elizabeth Kwatsoe Tawiah Sackey welcomed the endorsement and reaffirmed the city’s commitment to empowering youth in environmental advocacy and sustainable development. She noted that the rooftop garden is one of several green initiatives being rolled out under the city’s climate action plan.
The visit concluded with a joint pledge to deepen cooperation between Accra and London on climate policy, urban sustainability, and youth engagement.
