Rans Logistics has refunded GH¢19.1 million to the state after being cited for overpayments in the transportation of grains, according to findings from the Auditor-General of Ghana on government arrears.
The disclosure was made by Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem during a sitting of the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament on Monday, March 30. He described the development as an early indication that the ongoing audit process is producing tangible results.
Providing details to the Committee, Mr. Ampem explained that the audit findings were initially presented to Parliament on March 10, alongside referrals for further scrutiny. Within a week of the presentation, one of the companies cited had taken corrective action.
“Rans Logistics, which was identified as having been overpaid for the transportation of grains, has refunded GH¢19.1 million to the state just a week after the report was presented,” he noted.
However, he indicated that the refund does not fully cover the extent of the discrepancies highlighted in the audit. In addition to the monetary overpayment, the report also flagged excess payments made in kind, specifically involving more than 7,000 metric tonnes of rice.
“We are expecting the value equivalent of the excess rice supplied to also be recovered,” he added.
Mr. Ampem further revealed that additional steps are being considered to address all infractions identified in the audit, with the Office of the Attorney-General of Ghana currently reviewing the matter to determine the appropriate course of action.
He emphasised that the development underscores the importance of the Auditor-General’s work in promoting accountability and safeguarding public funds.
“This demonstrates the value of the audit process. It is already achieving its purpose of protecting state resources and ensuring financial discipline,” he said.
