NIA Operations Halt as Workers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Unpaid Allowances

Work at the National Identification Authority (NIA) has come to a standstill as members of the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU) begin an indefinite strike. The action follows delays and broken promises by the Ministry of Finance over unpaid Operational Support Allowances.

In a statement, the PSWU said repeated talks with the government have failed. Union leaders accused the Finance Ministry of stalling and ignoring several commitments to pay the allowances.

“We’ve exhausted all options for dialogue,” the statement said. “The Ministry’s silence and inaction have left workers frustrated and demoralized.”

The strike has disrupted key NIA services such as Ghana Card issuance, data updates, and new registrations nationwide.

At many NIA offices, citizens were left stranded this morning. Notices on office doors informed them of the strike.

The PSWU says the strike will continue until the Ministry of Finance takes clear steps to meet its obligations.

So far, the Ministry has not responded. However, public pressure is growing as the strike stretches on.
