MUSIGA President and veteran musician Bessa Simons has expressed concern that Ghana’s iconic Highlife genre is losing its place among younger generations who now gravitate toward Afrobeats and Amapiano.
Speaking to Graphic Showbiz, Simons said, “Highlife should be getting special attention. We have to work hard to make the youth believe in it again.”
He admitted that veteran musicians, including himself, contributed to the genre’s decline by stepping back too soon, leaving fewer authentic examples for the new generation.
“If we don’t act now, we risk losing one of our richest cultural legacies,” he cautioned, urging stronger efforts to preserve and modernize Highlife through education, innovation, and consistent recording.
