Head coach of Ghana’s Black Queens, Kim Lars Björkegren, has praised his youthful squad following Ghana’s qualification for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), describing the team’s progress as a sign of a promising future.
The Swedish coach expressed optimism that the team’s development will continue as they prepare for next year’s continental competition in Morocco.
Ghana booked their place at the tournament after defeating Egypt 7–0 on aggregate in the final qualifying round, winning 3–0 away in Cairo and 4–0 in the return leg in Accra.
“If you take in a WAFCON, it was a long time ago that a women’s team won a bronze medal,” Björkegren said in his post-match press conference. “And for many of the players, that was their first WAFCON, maybe about 18 players or so. With that experience, of course, it’s going to help us in the future. We are a young and new team, and this group is just getting better and better.”
Björkegren, who took charge of the Black Queens this year, said the team’s growth and determination give him confidence ahead of next year’s tournament.
