Ghana’s all-time leading FIFA World Cup scorer, Asamoah Gyan, has identified England as the strongest side in Group L but remains optimistic about the Black Stars’ chances of advancing to the next stage of the tournament.

Ghana have been drawn in a challenging group alongside England, Croatia and Panama.

The Black Stars are set to begin their campaign against Panama on June 17 before facing England on June 23 in what is expected to be one of the standout fixtures of the group.

Speaking during the unveiling of Ghana’s World Cup jersey by PUMA in New York, Gyan acknowledged England’s quality but stressed that Ghana’s primary focus is on qualification rather than individual matchups.

He noted that while England are among the top teams globally, Ghana remain determined to progress from the group stage. According to him, the clash between the two sides promises to be an exciting encounter, but the ultimate goal is securing a place in the knockout rounds.

Gyan also recalled his memorable performance against England in an international friendly in 2011, where he scored a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw after Andy Carroll had given England the lead.

The former Black Stars captain, who holds the record as Africa’s top scorer in World Cup history with six goals, reflected on his achievement with humility. He expressed hope that the next generation of Ghanaian players will surpass his record, emphasising that such milestones are meant to be broken.

Gyan further highlighted the long-standing partnership between Ghana football and PUMA, noting that the sportswear brand has been the national team’s kit sponsor since 2008.

He expressed appreciation for the role PUMA has played in his career and its continued contribution to Ghanaian football, particularly during major tournaments like the World Cup.

Gyan’s remarks come as anticipation builds ahead of the tournament, with Ghana aiming to make a strong impression on the global stage despite the challenges posed by a competitive group.
