Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Asake recently made headlines in Ghana not just for his electrifying performance but also for a high-profile meeting with Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama following his show in Accra.
The meeting took place shortly after Asake headlined the 2025 AfroFuture Ghana Festival at El Wak Stadium, part of the celebrated “December in GH” festivities that draw music lovers from across the continent. In widely shared footage from the encounter, the singer, whose full name is Ahmed Ololade, is seen warmly greeting President Mahama alongside members of his team, with notable Ghanaians like actor and politician John Dumelo and businessman Ibrahima Mahama present.

Their conversation quickly drew attention when President Mahama jokingly asked if Asake was “the one the guy fired the gun for,” referencing a viral incident tied to the festivities that saw a fan arrested for discharging a firearm during one of the celebratory events. Asake confirmed the link and took the opportunity to express remorse over the episode, describing it as an impulsive reaction born of excitement.
The artist appealed for clemency for the fan and urged the president to show leniency. However, President Mahama remained firm. He stated, “The law is the law,” and that Ghana’s legal processes must take their course, a position he has reiterated publicly.
Despite the moment of levity and serious undertones of the conversation, the meeting was broadly seen as a symbolic moment of cultural exchange and mutual respect between Ghana and a pan-African music ambassador. Asake’s performance at AfroFuture was one of the standout highlights of the festival, further solidifying the strong connection between Ghana’s vibrant cultural scene and the wider African music industry.
