Ghanaian dancehall icon Shatta Wale has scored a major career breakthrough as his 2025 single “Street Crown” has been officially approved for consideration by the Grammy Academy. The track, which features on his Voice of the Crown EP, will be competing in the Best African Music Performance category for the upcoming 68th Annual Grammy Awards.

The artist, born Charles Nii Armah Mensah, shared the news with fans through social media, describing it as a victory not just for him, but for Ghana and Africa as a whole.

Released earlier this year, “Street Crown” has made waves both locally and internationally. The song has been praised for its energetic production, authentic sound, and powerful lyrics that reinforce Shatta Wale’s standing as one of Africa’s leading voices in dancehall. Its entry into the Grammy consideration process reflects the increasing recognition of African music on the global stage.

While Grammy consideration does not automatically translate into a nomination, industry experts see this as a landmark moment for Shatta Wale. If shortlisted, he would officially become a Grammy nominee, further solidifying his place among the continent’s most influential artists.

The news has already drawn reactions from across Ghana’s entertainment circles. The Deputy CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Gilbert Abeiku “Santana” Aggrey, hailed the development as a “win for Ghana,” emphasizing the broader cultural and tourism benefits of having Ghanaian music highlighted on such a prestigious platform.

Shatta Wale’s recognition follows a growing trend of African artists breaking into international award spaces, from Burna Boy and Wizkid to Angelique Kidjo. For Ghana, “Street Crown” marks a step closer to the global spotlight, reinforcing the nation’s contributions to the vibrant Afro-dancehall and Afrobeats movements.
