Ghanaian boxing legend Azumah Nelson has issued a stern warning over what he describes as a disturbing trend in the sport, claiming that more than 80 percent of local boxers are hooked on drugs.
Speaking ahead of the inauguration of the Interim Management Committee (IMC) for Ghana Boxing, Mr. Nelson expressed concern that rampant drug use is eroding the future of the sport and damaging the reputation of Ghanaian fighters, once hailed as global champions.
According to the former world champion, drug abuse among boxers has become alarmingly widespread, leaving many young athletes unable to fully develop their talent or pursue successful careers in the ring. He stressed that the situation requires urgent intervention if Ghana is to restore its status as a boxing powerhouse.
The three-time world titleholder urged stakeholders including coaches, managers, and sports authorities, to step up efforts to educate young boxers about the dangers of drug use while also providing them with the right support systems. He emphasized that talent alone is not enough without discipline, health, and proper guidance.
Azumah Nelson’s comments come at a time when Ghana is looking to revive its boxing heritage through the work of the newly formed IMC. The committee has been tasked with restructuring the sport and tackling challenges ranging from poor infrastructure to inadequate management.
