Ghana has recorded a major milestone in its energy sector as the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition announces the successful completion of a crucial gas infrastructure upgrade carried out by Italian energy company ENI. The project, which forms part of Ghana’s long-term strategy to enhance domestic energy security and support cleaner industrial growth, has resulted in a significant increase in daily natural gas supply.

According to the Ministry, the upgrade focused on key processing and delivery systems within the Western Corridor Gas Network. ENI’s technical enhancements have expanded capacity and improved reliability, allowing for the daily supply of an additional 80 million standard cubic feet (mmscf) of natural gas.

Speaking at a media briefing in Accra, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, commended ENI for its commitment to Ghana’s energy transformation agenda.

“This upgrade marks a major step toward energy self-sufficiency,” Dr. Afriyie stated. “Not only does it improve power generation capacity, but it also supports our transition to cleaner, more sustainable sources of energy.”

The increased gas output is expected to benefit thermal power plants and reduce the country’s reliance on imported fuels, especially diesel and heavy fuel oil. Additionally, it will help stabilize electricity production, lower operational costs for power producers, and reduce emissions.

Industry analysts have welcomed the announcement, noting that efficient gas infrastructure is central to Ghana’s ambitions of becoming a regional energy hub. The government has indicated that further projects are in the pipeline to expand access, promote clean energy, and strengthen public-private collaboration in the sector.
