The Miami Dolphins delivered a remarkable offensive display in their home opener, overpowering the Denver Broncos with a final score of 70-20. This performance stands as the second-highest point total by a team in a regular-season NFL game.
The NFL’s all-time single-game scoring record is 73 points, set by the Chicago Bears during the 1940 NFL Championship. In regular-season play, Washington achieved 72 points in 1966.
Late in the fourth quarter, the Dolphins had an opportunity to break the regular-season NFL record and match the Bears’ mark. However, they chose to kneel instead of attempting a field goal from the Broncos’ 28-yard line. Head coach Mike McDaniel explained their decision, emphasizing that chasing records wasn’t their primary objective, and they preferred to maintain their sportsmanship.
Miami Dolphins victory marks only the fourth instance in NFL history, including playoffs, where a team has scored at least 70 points.
Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa led the Dolphins with a flawless first half, completing 16-of-16 passes for 206 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions, establishing a commanding 35-13 lead by halftime. Tagovailoa’s performance was historic, becoming the first quarterback since 1991 to complete 15 or more passes without an incompletion and amassing 200-plus yards before halftime.
The Dolphins’ running backs, Raheem Mostert and De’Von Achane, played pivotal roles, collectively scoring eight touchdowns and breaking the franchise’s scoring record by 15 points. Achane rushed for 203 yards on 18 carries, while Mostert contributed 142 total yards.
Tagovailoa and many of the team’s stars were substituted early in the fourth quarter, with Tagovailoa concluding the game with four touchdown passes on 23-of-26 completions.
Miami Dolphins total offensive output of 726 yards established a new franchise record.
Broncos head coach Sean Payton described the game as “embarrassing” and “tough to watch,” expressing disappointment in his team’s performance.

The historic loss brought back memories of the Chicago Bears’ dominant victory in 1940 and Washington’s high-scoring regular-season game in 1966. The only other instance of a team scoring 70 points in an NFL game occurred when the Los Angeles Rams achieved this feat against the Baltimore Colts in 1950.
