The Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election has officially wrapped up, with electoral officials currently engaged in sorting and counting ballots at polling stations throughout the constituency.
Voting commenced at 7:00 a.m. and concluded at 5:00 p.m., marking the end of a crucial election to fill the vacant seat left by the late Member of Parliament, Naser Toure. Election results are anticipated to be announced by the Electoral Commission later today.
Five candidates competed for the seat:
- Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed – National Democratic Congress (NDC)
- Baba Ali Yusif – New Patriotic Party (NPP)
- Umar Sanda Mohammed – Independent candidate
- David Kanor – Independent candidate
- Ibrahim Iddrisu – Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG)
Despite low voter turnout, the election was conducted without any reported incidents of violence. A heightened police presence was observed to ensure a smooth process, and supporters monitored the ballot counting closely.
Both the NDC and NPP candidates expressed optimism regarding the outcome, with their supporters confident about securing a victory in this highly scrutinized election.
