The United States has announced plans to deploy additional troops and aircraft as part of a renewed push to combat drug trafficking in the Caribbean and Latin America.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, speaking from the Dominican Republic, which has granted temporary authorization for U.S. deployments on its soil, said the US is seeking cooperation from more nations willing to host foreign forces, describing the effort as a model for regional collaboration against what he termed “drug terrorists.”
Under the plan, the deployments will combine troops, aircraft, intelligence, naval and maritime assets to interdict trafficking routes. Recent months have seen a sharp escalation in US operations: maritime strikes against suspected drug-smuggling vessels have resulted in casualties, signaling the administration’s willingness to use force in the campaign.
The move represents the latest phase of a broader campaign adopted by the US to confront narcotics trafficking across the Western Hemisphere, with the Caribbean viewed as a critical transit zone.
