The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has denounced an attack on its base in southern Lebanon that resulted in injuries to three Ghanaian soldiers serving as peacekeepers. The attack occurred during heavy exchanges of fire in a region known for its volatility.
In statements shared on X, UNIFIL reported that the incident took place on Friday evening when significant shelling and airstrikes were directed near their position in Al Qawzah, southwestern Lebanon.
“Amidst the intense fire, three peacekeepers sustained injuries while inside their base,” UNIFIL noted.
Emergency protocols were activated, and the most critically hurt soldier was moved to a hospital in Beirut for further treatment, while the other two received care at a nearby UNIFIL medical facility. Authorities managed to control a fire that ignited within the base during the attack.
UNIFIL condemned this attack, emphasizing that peacekeepers, who operate under an international mandate, should never be targeted. The mission stated, “It is unacceptable that peacekeepers performing Security Council-mandated tasks are subjected to such violence.”
They further warned that such actions could contravene international humanitarian law and may even be classified as war crimes. “Any assault on UNIFIL peacekeepers constitutes a serious violation of international norms and Security Council Resolution 1701, potentially tantamount to a war crime,” the statement emphasized.
Resolution 1701, established in the wake of the 2006 Lebanon War, outlines the framework for maintaining peace along the Israel-Lebanon border and serves as the legal foundation for the deployment of UNIFIL forces.
UNIFIL has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack to uncover the source of the fire. “The UNIFIL will thoroughly investigate this unfortunate event,” the mission declared.
This incident occurred amid renewed tensions between Israel and various armed groups in southern Lebanon, particularly Hezbollah, which has engaged in frequent skirmishes with the Israel Defense Forces since hostilities in the region intensified.
Ghana has long been recognized as a steadfast contributor to UN peacekeeping missions and has deployed hundreds of troops as part of UNIFIL in Lebanon. The Ghanaian contingent works diligently to monitor the “Blue Line,” the demarcated boundary between Lebanon and Israel, conducting patrols, aiding humanitarian efforts, and helping stabilize communities affected by ongoing conflicts.
This latest attack highlights the increasing dangers faced by UN peacekeepers in a region fraught with unrest. UNIFIL has consistently urged all parties involved to adhere to international law to ensure the safety of both peacekeepers and civilian populations, warning that continued assaults could further destabilize an already fragile area.
