Outgoing UK High Commissioner to Ghana, Harriet Thompson, has lauded the growing economic partnership between the United Kingdom and Ghana, noting a sharp rise in bilateral trade.
Speaking at a farewell event in Accra, Ms. Thompson revealed that trade between the two countries has reached £1.5 billion, marking a significant milestone in UK-Ghana relations.
She attributed the growth to deepening commercial cooperation, strategic investments, and strong collaboration between the public and private sectors of both nations. According to her, the UK remains committed to supporting Ghana’s economic transformation through trade, investment, and sustainable development.
“The economic bond between our two countries has never been stronger,” she said. “This growth reflects the potential of Ghana’s economy and the mutual benefits of our partnership.”
Ms. Thompson also emphasized the UK’s ongoing support for Ghana in areas such as green energy, infrastructure, and education. She described Ghana as a key ally in West Africa and expressed confidence in continued cooperation after her departure.
The UK-Ghana partnership is anchored in the UK-Ghana Trade Partnership Agreement, signed in 2021, which ensures tariff-free access for Ghanaian exports to the UK market and encourages investment in critical sectors.
As she prepares to leave her post, Ms. Thompson’s remarks underscore the importance of sustained economic diplomacy in building strong international ties.
