THERE IS NO WAY AROUND IT: the more saturated the “superhero” genre becomes in film and television ventures, the more difficult it becomes to generate anything that is both excellent in quality and finds a high-yield audience. After more than a decade of dominance, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has fallen in its post-Endgame and post-pandemic phases (a recent Variety piece went into detail on the studio’s woes), and DC is hoping that Marvel’s eccentric master James Gunn will finally right their ship.

With “the big two” largely in disarray, Prime Video’s production has been a huge comfort for genre enthusiasts. We love The Boys’ satirical universe (and its spinoff, Gen V, which just finished its first season), and now,
After nearly two years, Invincible is back for its eagerly anticipated second season.
Based on The Walking Dead author Robert Kirkman’s long-running Image Comics book (a prolific writer who also writes the Invincible series on Prime Video), Invincible stood apart in its debut season by accomplishing things that no one else was doing. Invincible proved to be a fine adaptation for the comic’s devotees and an easy one for new fans to become fascinated with, with a touch of The Boy’s humor but not quite as much, while still providing an earnest, standalone, R-rated (and gore-filled) coming-of-age superhero origin narrative.
Season 2 then takes things to a whole new level. The show’s voice performers (headed by Steven Yeun, JK Simmons, and Sandra Oh) all have more to do—and more opportunities to stretch their dramatic and humorous talents. The animation budget has certainly been boosted, and as a result, the tale can achieve greater heights and scale; things will reach planets, galaxies, and universes that Season 1 didn’t even hint at.

But we promise it will be worth the wait.
