Accra-based investigative group Tiger Eye PI has dismissed claims that its founder, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, produced and withheld an exposé on alleged corruption in Parliament. The statement comes in response to comments attributed to anti-corruption campaigner Vitus Azeem, who reportedly suggested that an undercover investigation into Parliament had been completed, previewed, and subsequently shelved.
In its response, Tiger Eye PI described the allegations as “entirely false, contrived, and a figment of Mr. Azeem’s imagination.” The group challenged Mr. Azeem to provide concrete evidence, including the names of any Members of Parliament who allegedly previewed the investigation. The organisation stressed that no such investigation had been conducted or presented to lawmakers.
Tiger Eye PI said it would normally ignore recurring claims of this nature, but responded due to the seriousness of the allegations and the prominence of the individual making them. The statement emphasised that public interest in exposing wrongdoing does not equate to evidence of an investigation, nor does it compel the group to undertake one.
The organisation also warned that unverified claims could mislead the public into believing that Anas deliberately withheld evidence, an assertion it firmly rejected. Highlighting the dangers faced by investigative journalists, Tiger Eye PI cited the murder of former team member Ahmed Suale as a reminder of the risks involved in its work.
Describing Mr. Azeem’s remarks as “reckless and irresponsible,” Tiger Eye PI urged him to substantiate his claims. It reaffirmed its commitment to exposing corruption, noting that decisions on what to investigate and when rest solely with the organisation based on prevailing circumstances.
