Socrates Safo Applauds NDC’s Support for Creative Arts, Slams NPP for Neglect

Ghanaian filmmaker and outspoken NPP supporter Socrates Safo has reignited debate over how political parties treat the country’s creative arts sector. In a recent interview on Okay FM, he openly praised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for embracing creatives and criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for sidelining them.

Safo said the NPP often refuses to offer creatives leadership roles because they lack formal academic qualifications. He believes this mindset limits the party’s ability to tap into the sector’s full potential.

“When the NPP was in power, creatives were treated with condescension. They were not considered for important roles simply because they didn’t have degrees,” he said.

In contrast, Socrates lauded the NDC for recognizing and empowering talents in the arts. He pointed to the appointment of veteran actress Kalsoume Sinare as Ghana’s Ambassador to Spain, calling it a strong example of the NDC’s inclusive approach.

“I get jealous of my colleagues in the NDC. Their leaders appreciate and elevate them. My party doesn’t seem to value us in the same way,” Socrates Safo added.

His comments have fueled renewed calls for better representation of creatives in public leadership. Many in the industry argue that both major parties must involve artists in policymaking and development planning.

As Ghana’s creative economy expands, the call for political inclusion grows louder. Socrates Safo’s voice adds weight to the argument that creatives aren’t just entertainers—they are changemakers, capable of shaping national discourse and driving innovation.
